#combatthepricecap: How Thrift Energy can Help You Through these Tough Times

As a solar pv installer in the North East, we are seeing first hand how many families are struggling with energy prices and the cost of living. Sadly, around 12% of people in the region are currently struggling to pay their energy bills. Tackling fuel poverty is at the heart of our core values. This is why we’ve introduced our #combathepricecap initiative to provide cost of living crisis help.

We are dedicated to installing energy efficiency measures in homes across the region while also ensuring that we can make these products affordable and accessible to as many people as possible.

We are also expanding the support that we are providing by sharing useful money saving information and ways that households can get support.

Keep reading to learn more about the ways that we can help you and other households through these uncertain times.

Education

One of the main ways we are trying to tackle the rising cost of living is by keeping up-to-date with what is going on in the energy industry and in the news from trusted sources. We are then relaying this information to our community.

We are also keeping an eye out for misinformation and misconceptions so that our audience do not fall victim to it. One example of this was when many people were under the impression that the new Energy Price Guarantee meant no household would have to pay over £2,500 for energy bills per year.

This was a major misconception as the figure was simply an illustration of how much an average household would pay. Essentially, if you use more energy than average, you are likely to have to pay more than average too.

Access to Funding

A lot of low income households are under the impression that they cannot enjoy the benefits of insulation, solar panels and other energy efficiency measures in their home. This is because they believe that installing such measures will always be expensive and unaffordable.

However, this is not the case.

For low income households, there are lots of grants and funding opportunities available. These include the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG).

Such financial help can make insulation, solar panels, new boilers and other low carbon heating measures affordable.

Depending on which grant you are able to receive, your energy efficiency measures can either be heavily discounted or free.

We have built relationships with multiple funding providers so that we can help you to upgrade your heating and energy efficiency for less.

Having energy saving measures installed with funding means that you can access savings on your energy bills that you might have thought you previously wouldn’t be able to.

If you are a low income household looking for affordable ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency, check out our guide to funding options and enquire about your eligibility here.

Finance Plans

Another way we are working to help customers save money on their energy bills is by offering finance plans on certain installation projects.

Breaking down the cost of solar panels into instalments has helped many of our previous customers to go solar without it costing the Earth (see what we did there?).

Being flexible and offering different payment options means that you can find a payment method that suits your current financial position. It also means that you can avoid having to take out a third party loan which could have a high interest rate.

External Support to Combat the Cost of Living Crisis

Even if your home is as energy efficient as can be and you are minimising energy consumption where possible, you might not feel like this is not enough to truly offset rising energy and living costs.

In these instances, the best course of action is to look at what external support is available.

External support can come from the government, businesses, charities and even websites. The support can come in many forms including vouchers, offers or just useful advice.

At Thrift, we are keeping an eye out for any resources to share that might help you to save your hard earned money during these difficult times.

The Help for Households website is a useful resource and it has inspired us to see how you can save money in areas beyond energy consumption.

We have been scouring the internet and keeping an eye on the news looking for other money saving advice. This has helped us to shine a spotlight on useful deals which may benefit members of our community. For example, when ASDA shared that they would be offering a £1 winter warmer meal deal to all over-60s.
