The environmental impact of solar panels

If you consider that the UK now has over a million solar installations, we’re talking about millions of tonnes of carbon emissions being prevented from entering our atmosphere annually. Furthermore, solar panels typically generate clean electricity for 25-30 years, producing zero emissions during operation. Compare this to emissions from fossil fuels, which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) describe as the dominant cause of global warming, and you can see why solar power makes us feel so positively sunny about the future.

What about manufacturing and materials?

Now, you might be asking: “What about the environmental impact of making solar panels?” It’s a fair question, and we’re not going to skirt around it. Solar panel production does require mining for materials like silicon and copper, but the industry has made remarkable strides in sustainable mining practices and material efficiency. Modern solar panels use significantly less silicon than their predecessors, and manufacturers are increasingly powered by renewable energy themselves. Research also indicates that solar panels typically ‘pay back’ their carbon cost (i.e. the carbon emitted during the manufacturing process) within an average of 1 – 4 years. Considering that they last for around 25 years, that’s an enormous net positive for the environment!

Can solar panel components be recycled?

Remember those mobile phones from the early 2000s that now live in your kitchen drawer? Well, solar panels are different. Many components are now recoverable and recyclable or reusable. The EU has implemented regulations regarding solar panel recycling (the Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive), which the UK conforms to, and the number of PV recycling companies and research institutions has increased notably over the past few years. Plus, some organisations are developing innovative processes to recover valuable materials like silver and silicon, which can then be used to manufacture new panels. All in all, the future looks bright (and circular) when it comes to recycling strategies.
