What is Solar PV and how can your electrically-heated home benefit?

With more and more talk in the news about protecting the environment, it is only natural to consider installing a renewable energy source in your home to reduce your carbon footprint. One of the first renewable solutions that comes to mind is probably Solar PV.

In this blog, we’re going to explain to you exactly what Solar PV is and just how it can benefit your home, especially if it is electrically heated.

So what is Solar PV?

Solar Photovoltaics (PV), or solar electricity panels as you probably know them, capture and convert energy from the sun into electricity that can be used to power your home. This means that you can generate your own renewable electricity. Typically, the panels are installed on the roof of your building, but in cases where this is not possible they can be placed on the ground too.

The panels are made from layers of semiconducting material, typically silicon, which are activated when light shines on them. Even on a cloudy day, electrons are knocked loose to create a flow of electricity. Obviously the sunnier it is, the more electricity is generated. An inverter then changes the current of the electricity produced from DC to AC, and the electricity your panels have generated is ready for use in your home!

How can they benefit my home?

Installing Solar PV can have some surprising benefits for your home. As we’ve already discussed, a home that generates its electricity using Solar PV will naturally have a lower carbon footprint than a home that doesn’t. The Renewable Energy Hub says just one solar panel can save 900kg of CO2 per year. If you really wanted to get your carbon footprint down, you could also consider an Air Source Heat Pump. Call out an Air Source Heat Pump installer and combine both renewable methods for the ultimate carbon friendly home.

Using Solar PV to heat your home also stands to lower your energy bills. When solar panels are fitted correctly, your system will switch seamlessly between using the electricity generated by your panels and electricity from the grid. Using less electricity from the grid, ultimately means you’ll spend less on your energy bills. However, you will still need to shop around for a competitive tariff for the electricity you will use from the grid. If you already have a system, Solar Together recommends looking for a Feed-In Tariff.

Another amazing thing about Solar PV installed by Thrift Energy, is that they come with a 25 year guarantee. Depending on the system you install, you can typically offset the initial cost within the first 12 years. Perhaps the most appealing thing however, is that they can be installed in just one day.

We hope that the above information has given you an idea of exactly how beneficial Solar PV is, not only in helping the environment but also in saving you a bit of money on your energy bills. As always, if you have any questions about Solar PV systems, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
