How solar panels are a sustainable and efficient energy source

By now, we all know how solar panels work and we understand that they are good for the environment, and are instrumental in the fight against climate change, but do you understand why this is? In order to further your understanding of solar panels, we have explained exactly how solar panels are a sustainable and efficient energy source.

The sun is a natural source of energy

We are never going to run out of sunlight, that is a fact. It is also a fact that harvesting energy from the sun doesn’t damage the environment at all. All we need to harvest the sun’s energy is solar panels on our roof, that then convert the energy into electricity. Therefore, solar energy does not contribute to global warming, instead contributing to reducing your carbon footprint, making it a sustainable energy source.

Solar panels require little maintenance

It’s true! Once a solar panel system is installed on a roof, they are usually guaranteed for 20 to 25 years and will only need the occasional clean in that time and in some instances, an annual inspection. As long as your panels are working properly, they won’t need any additional maintenance throughout the year. How efficient is that?

It’s all about location

Before you call your local Solar PV installer to come and fit you a system, you need to take the position of your house into consideration. Unless your house faces the south, you won’t get the sun for the entire day. If you have a house that is east facing, you will receive the sun for most of the day and if you’re west facing, you will get the sun for a few hours in the afternoon. In order for the investment to be worthwhile and efficient, your home needs to be able to take as much energy from the sun as possible, in order to reduce your energy bills, justifying the investment into the Solar PV system.

What about British weather?

Solar panels are tested extensively under extreme weather conditions, including snow, wind and rain storms. The efficiency of solar panels can be reduced when more than 5cm of snow accumulates on the panels, but due to the slope of your roof and the panels, the snow should simply glide off. There is also the possibility of snow from the ground reflecting up to the panels, generating even more energy. Panels can also withstand hail stones up to 1 inch in diameter, falling at 50mph before seeing any damage. We think that makes the panels pretty durable!

We hope that you now have a good understanding of how solar panels are a sustainable and efficient energy source. There are so many things that make solar panels and efficient source of energy that we just didn’t have time to list here, like how they generate between 250 and 400 watts of power every hour and you can store the electricity they produce to use at night, but we’ll save that for another day.
